It’s Autumn!

Well it’s here again, the time of year when I mostly hear, ‘I love Autumn, it’s my favourite season’, or ‘The shops are selling Christmas stuff already!’. Why are some of us drawn to a particular season more than another? When I ask why, they often say it’s because of the beautiful colours, the golden leaves and the crisp mornings. All that is true of course, but it also means less daylight and damp weather! However, I must admit my autumn/winter wardrobe is much more sophisticated than my summer one, when I mostly look like Kevin Patterson, or a Tarantino dork.

From a TCM perspective

Autumn is an important season, as they all are of course. The associated element is Metal and the organs are the Lungs and the Colon. Emotionally, it is the time of letting go, mourning and weeping. Just as the trees must let go of their leaves, so must we let go of the more expansive summer, and the past. It is also the time to prepare for the cold yin months of Winter. The Lungs and Colon are both organs that handle the day to day processing of waste products, deciding what must be retained and what must be released in the form of faeces and carbon dioxide. Holding on to waste is toxic and unhealthy. People who can’t let go are often stuck in the past, and also quite possibly severely constipated!

Energetic Practices

If you practice Qi Gong, Yoga or meditation, you are probably concentrating on the metal element, or maybe simply flexibility and non-attachment. If you are into sound therapy, try singing the Lung/Metal sound, which is SEEAIR. This sound is great for expelling negative influences as well as pathogens such as germs, viruses and pollutants. Making the SEEAIR sound is also good for colds, flu, toothaches, asthma, emphysema, or depression.

If none of that helps, then come for some acupuncture 🙂
